Community engagement on energy efficiency in the Hamlets of Kugaaruk and Pangnirtung, Nunavut.
Working with CLEAResult Canada, Sean led an engagement process on energy efficiency in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. This work included:
Collaborate design of an engagement process.
Field visit to Kugaaruk, which included:
Stakeholder/rightsholder interviews.
Community open houses.
Field visit/context report.
Collaborate program design.
Development of the Kugaaruk Energy Efficiency Program (KEEP) concept.
Support for (successful) funding proposals to launch KEEP.
Following the success of this Kugaaruk engagement, the Hamlet of Pangnirtung, also in Nunavut, asked CLEAResult to design and implement a similar engagement process. Sean also led this work, which followed a similar path to that of Kugaaruk. As in that Hamlet, the Pangnirtung engagement led to the successful securement of funding to launch the Power of Pang energy efficiency program.
Innovation Days for Newfoundland & Labrador’s Isolated Communities Energy Efficiency Program.
Sean designed and facilitated an ‘Innovation Days’ multi-day session hosted by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and CLEAResult in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The objective was to find new, innovative, and practical solutions to energy-related challenges faced by isolated diesel communities in Labrador, and to identify tangible ways to implement these solutions within the Isolated Communities Energy Efficiency Program.
This event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from Inuit governments, utilities, the provincial and federal governments, the private sector, and program delivery specialists. The goal was to gain perspective on the energy issues these communities face and to work together to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level.
Sean led the design of this strategic conversation and facilitated the discussions, brainstorming, and goal-setting exercises. The Innovation Days process embraced a ‘design thinking’ approach and explored what is, what if, what stands out, and what's next. CLEAResult has since adopted this ‘Innovation Days’ process for exploring several other projects.
Strategic engagement on climate-related funding success in Nova Scotia for the Climate Plan & Strategic Action Team of the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Working with the provincial Climate Funding Navigator, Sean collaborated with fellow consultant Lara Ryan to lead a focused stakeholder and rightsholder engagement process that sought feedback and ideas on how to better serve groups active in the climate space.
The objectives were to gain a deeper understanding of the climate funding application ecosystem in Nova Scotia, hear ideas for improving support for applicants, and make recommendations for improvement. The consultants worked with the Climate Action Team on the design of the engagement process, prepared stakeholder & rightsholder lists, conducted a jurisdictional scan, created online surveys, hosted one-on-one in-depth interviews, designed and facilitated group engagement sessions, analyzed results, and prepared a final report.
The stakeholders and rightsholders invited into the process included representatives from climate action and capacity building organizations, municipalities, environmental NGOs, youth-focused organizations, community development groups, universities and other research-based organizations, entrepreneurship and economic development organizations, equity, diversity, and inclusion-focused organizations, the natural resources sector, select businesses active in the climate space, and provincial elected officials.
